¿Quiénes podríamos haber sido? Si hubiéramos escogido otro oficio, si nos hubiésemos quedado en casa, si hubiéramos conocido a otra persona, si nos hubiéramos atrevido a intentar algo o hubiésemos renunciado a tiempo. ¿Qué vida habríamos vivido entonces? De las vidas que no vivimos es de lo que habla Vidas pasadas, la opera prima de Celine Song que se ha ganado un puesto entre las mejores películas del año. De eso y del amor, que nunca sobra.
Cuanto más tiempo habitamos el mundo, escogiendo caminos o sometiéndonos a las casualidades, más se limita nuestro abanico de posibles vidas. Cuantos más años pasan para Nora y Hae Sung construyendo historias separadas, más improbable parece su romance.
Su relación pudo empezar (y, quizá, también acabar) cuando aún eran niños y descubrían el amor en las caminatas del colegio a casa o en las tardes de juegos en el parque, pero la familia de Nora emigró de Corea a Canadá y esa posible vida les fue arrebatada. Como lo que se interrumpe siempre es más difícil de superar que lo que tiene un final, su romance tuvo una segunda oportunidad cuando los dos amigos, recién entrados en la veintena, volvieron a contactar y empezaron a verse por videollamada. Pero la distancia y sus proyectos personales los llevaron a tomar otro camino. Doce años después, Hae Sung viaja a Nueva York para reencontrarse con Nora, y ella, que está casada, debe volver a elegir con qué vida se queda y, por tanto, a cuál renuncia.
La opción lógica para una premisa así sería una trama de enredo, secretos y pasiones, de cómo el amor verdadero resurge a escondidas del malvado marido blanco, como él mismo se describe bromeando. Vidas pasadas, en cambio, es mucho más contenida y honesta. Contenida en el sentido de que la interacción entre los personajes rechaza los arrebatos y “se reduce” a lúcidas conversaciones, pequeños gestos y largos silencios que construyen un sentido romance sin necesidad de consumarlo en pantalla. Honesta porque a pesar de que hay muchas cosas que no se dicen en voz alta, los tres vértices del triángulo amoroso son conscientes en todo momento de qué está pasando y cuáles son los sentimientos de los otros, e impera entre ellos el respeto y la comprensión.
La misma comprensión que se exige del espectador. La película nunca juzga a sus protagonistas, los pone a debatir en torno a una situación triste, frustrante e ineludible, sin señalar ninguna salida como la moralmente adecuada. Sus tres posiciones nos duelen. ¿Podemos culpar a Hae Sung por querer descubrir si aún hay esperanza para esa relación que lleva años posponiéndose? ¿A Nora por no poder evitar su atracción hacia el amor de su infancia que nunca la ha abandonado del todo? ¿Y a Arthur por sentirse amenazado y fútil ante la romántica historia de su mujer con otra persona?

En esta cinta libre de artificio, Celine Song nos lleva, con sutileza pero clara y firmemente, a explorar la complejidad de los sentimientos humanos. Y en su recorrido quizá el mayor conflicto es ese que Arthur tanto teme: el poder de un relato, de una idealización. La historia de amor que podría haber sido y no fue suena más sugerente y atractiva que lo prosaico y ordinario de sus vidas reales. Nora y Hae Sung se arriesgan a que esa inevitable romantización pueda nublar su razón. Especialmente ella, que —como deja clarísimo la escena más divertida de la película— percibe a su potencial amante también como un regreso a sus raíces, un tributo a la vida coreana que renunció a vivir cuando emigró de su país.
Pero con la idealización rivaliza el pragmatismo: ¿por qué dejar su vida actual, que aunque menos estimulante es satisfactoria y también se asienta sobre un amor real y sincero, por abandonarse a lo desconocido? Y, en cualquier caso, ¿hasta qué punto elegimos realmente con quién estar y cómo vivir? ¿Pesan más nuestras decisiones o nuestras circunstancias y la casualidad?
Decía una madre, en otra estupenda película, que «todas esas vidas que no vives son siempre perfectas, son ideales, pero en algún momento hay que vivir la que te ha tocado» (Cinco Lobitos, Alauda Ruíz de Azúa, 2022). Aún así, nunca podremos evitar mirar con nostalgia a las personas que podríamos haber sido y ya nunca existirán. Vidas pasadas, aun en esta línea, es ligeramente más amable porque encuentra un vacío legal en la tradición coreana: quizá en otra vida, pasada o futura, aún podamos vivir lo que no nos hemos permitido en esta.
