Tras pasar por el Festival de Cannes, de Toronto o de San Sebastián, entre otros, El agua llega hoy por fin a las salas de cine. Para su primer largometraje, la directora valenciana Elena López Riera vuelve a su Orihuela natal y abraza algo que tiene mucho que ver con la propia naturaleza del cine: los relatos populares, las historias que se construyen colectivamente.
El agua se introduce en la vida de Ana, en sus deseos y sus frustraciones, en sus ganas de escapar del pueblo y en la lealtad a su familia, con la fluidez y la naturalidad de quien se ha molestado en conocer a las personas que inspiran sus personajes. En su verano conviven la libertad y las cadenas de la adolescencia en conflictos que suenan muy cercanos, a los que dan vida, en su mayoría, actores y actrices no profesionales.
Con un estilo que nos remite al documental, López Riera encaja en su película testimonios a cámara de vecinas de Orihuela, antiguos documentos de prensa sobre inundaciones en la zona o vídeos caseros reales de la DANA de 2019. En una especie de democratización de la imagen, El agua se nutre, como las leyendas locales, de muchas voces. El resultado es sólido, curioso y efectivo, y respira realismo.

Y con ese realismo, López Riera deja entrar lo fantástico, porque así es como se cuela también en la cotidianidad de las cocinas, de los bares, de los patios, entre un comentario sobre el tiempo y un secreto para cocinar un buen arroz con costra. La leyenda del río de El agua, que se prenda de mujeres y las reclama, que se enfurece y se desborda si es rechazado, forma parte de esa literatura oral que, de boca en boca, vira de lo real a lo mágico hasta volver a hacerse un hueco en el natural discurrir de los días.
Así aceptan los personajes de la película, sin maravilla ni sobresalto, la mística voluntad del río Segura, como los males de ojo o los favores de una santa. Sus creencias y mitos forman parte de su realidad, de su identidad, de su rutina. Y el relato popular los incorpora sin distinguir «la historia de la poesía».

Este homenaje a los cuentos de nuestras abuelas es la forma que la directora elige para hablarnos de la compleja relación que los vecinos de la Vega Baja del Segura tienen con el agua. La lluvia y el río, en esa región tan seca que «no sabe llover», son a la vez fuente de vida y amenaza de muerte. De pérdida, al menos. Pero también nos dibuja otra desgracia en la sucia superficie del Segura: la estigmatización del deseo y la independencia femeninas, el cuerpo de la mujer como propiedad colectiva.
Elena López Riera ha hecho una película cercana y singular, reivindicativa y honesta, orgullosa y vulnerable, a la que sin duda merece la pena asomarse. El agua sería valiente incluso si no fuera una ópera prima.
