Atrás quedaron los años en los que parecía que el anime era una cosa de nicho. Las hordas de fans dispuestos a tumbar los servidores de Crunchyroll con cada estreno de Ataque a los titanes (Kobayashi, Seko y Takagi, 2013-) son solo una de las mil pruebas con las que convivimos a diario.
De entre todos los animes que han hecho tan increíblemente popular la animación japonesa, creo que es seguro nombrar un tridente de títulos que destacan por su increíble calado. Como no podría ser de otro modo, se trata de la saga Bola de dragón (Akira Toriyama, 1986-1989), One Piece (Eiichiro Oda, 1999-) y Naruto (Masashi Kishimoto, 2002-2007). Esta santísima trinidad del manga y anime shonen no solo ha conseguido que hasta a la gente más alejada del anime le suenen sus nombres, sino que han configurado el género tal y como lo vivimos hoy en día.
Hoy cumple años una de estas obras magnas, Naruto Shippuden (Kishimoto, 2007-2017), y venimos a contarte por qué deberías dejar atrás tus prejuicios y verla (en caso de que no lo hayas hecho ya). Artículo libre de spoilers y episodios de relleno.
Naruto empieza como lo hacen las grandes aventuras: con un improbable héroe de dudosas habilidades pero gran corazón. Naruto es un solitario niño que vive en la Aldea oculta de la Hoja y su sueño es convertirse en el ninja más poderoso de todos. Aunque el camino del ninja no es fácil y Naruto parece demasiado torpe para dominar las técnicas que aprenden sus amigos, pronto encuentra en sus compañeros Sasuke y Sakura una familia en la que apoyarse para convertirse en el mejor.
¿De dónde sale Naruto Shippuden?
Antes que nada, y para evitar posibles confusiones, creo que es importante aclarar un asunto: Naruto y Naruto Shippuden no son lo mismo. Para ser más exactos, Shippuden es una especie de enmienda de error por uno de los principales problemas que afrontaba la serie original: la falta de material de base, ya que el ritmo de emisión de la serie había alcanzado al manga.
Algunos de los personajes más importantes de Naruto
Que no os engañen las fechas. Aunque Naruto acabara oficialmente en 2007, su historia llevaba en pausa dos años. En 2005 el anime alcanzó el impasse que marcaría el comienzo de una etapa de largo y doloroso relleno, compuesto por arcos al margen del canon de la serie y de muy poco interés y cuidado por sus personajes.
Así, Shippuden empezó cuando acabó su predecesora, para llevarnos a un mundo muy parecido al que habíamos conocido en Naruto, pero lo suficientemente cambiado para que todo tuviera un sabor completamente nuevo. Ahora sí empezaba la verdadera aventura de los héroes de varias generaciones.

Quien diga que, de pequeño, no ha pensado que podía hacer las cosas mejor que sus padres, miente. Naruto, nuestro héroe improbable, cumple esta fantasía, no de poder —aunque lo consiga en gran medida a hostia limpia—, sino esperanzadora, de crear un mundo mejor para sí mismo y los demás.
Por si el universo que construía Naruto desde su propia génesis no parecía suficientemente aterrador, con ciudades estando constantemente en guerra y una juventud militarizada que sirve como carne de cañón, al crecer, Naruto es aún más consciente de los problemas que acarrea el mundo en el que vive. Esa consciencia, claro está, solo alimenta la confusión y la rabia de un joven que lleva toda su vida siendo testigo de la violencia institucional, y de cómo las rencillas entre grandes señores hacen daño a todos a su alrededor.
Si en Naruto asistíamos como espectadores a los conflictos de un mundo roto y en constante tensión, en Shippuden, una vez Naruto ha crecido, empezamos a entender por qué las cosas son como son. Bien entrada la nueva serie, y tras impedir una auténtica catástrofe, Naruto se hace una promesa a sí mismo: él seguirá su propio camino del ninja. El joven, aún con mucho que aprender, se impone como misión una que va mucho más allá de la que quedaba colgada en Naruto: transformar el mundo en el que vive para solucionar sus fallos estructurales. No más sacrificios inútiles, no más mentiras ni juegos de poder. El mundo que Naruto quiere es uno donde brillen la bondad y la honestidad.

Si algo se ha convertido en un cliché, es porque funciona (o solía hacerlo). En el caso del género de aventuras, y más concretamente en el propio shonen, no es infrecuente que el poder de un gran protagonista resida en quienes le rodean. La moraleja es sencilla: puedes entrenar duro y entregar tu vida a un villano oscuro y serpenteante para hacerte más poderoso, pero si no tienes a un grupo de amigos que te apoye y te cuide, estás frito.
Naruto crece sin amigos, completamente solo y aislado de los niños de su aldea. Eso le convierte en un chico obstinado, cabezota y, muy a menudo, insoportable de cara al resto. Por otro lado, también le convierte en una persona constante que, a pesar de tener dificultades para conectar con los demás, siempre está dispuesto a ver lo mejor en todas las personas y sacarlo a flote.
Quizás, el momento más revelador a este respecto sucede en el primer capítulo de Naruto Shippuden, cuando Naruto vuelve a la Villa de la Hoja después de varios años de entrenamiento y se reencuentra, uno a uno, a sus viejos amigos. Todos han cambiado, como no podía ser de otra forma, pero el espectador atento y quien haya disfrutado de Naruto como se merece, verá que la mayoría de estos cambios no son sino la consecuencia directa de haber formado equipo con Naruto en el pasado.
No es solo que en Naruto Shippuden se ponga en relieve el poder de la amistad como algo radical y necesario, sino que toda la serie respira esta idea. En el propio ADN de Naruto está escrito el apoyo, la confianza y las ganas de salvar a todo el mundo, y es esta constancia la que no solo le lleva a crear su propio camino del ninja, sino que además le ayuda a transformar a las personas a su alrededor. Al final, como dice el cliché, el tesoro son los amigos que hacemos por el camino. Y vaya tesoros encuentra Naruto.
