Ganadora de la Sección Oficial de la 56º edición del Festival de Sitges, Cuando acecha la maldad no ha tardado en convertirse en el mayor fenómeno de la historia del terror argentino. La cinta, dirigida por Demián Rugna, explora una nueva perspectiva del cine de posesiones y construye una mitología propia en torno a los conflictos sociales de la población local.
Cuando acecha la maldad sigue a los hermanos Yazurlo, habitantes de una remota zona rural que se topan con un embichado. Aterrorizados por la inminente amenaza de que el poseído engendre el mal que alberga, y ante la imposibilidad de eliminarlo, deciden abandonarlo a su suerte. Pero el horror acecha en cada esquina y, propagándose como una enfermedad, la maldad hará lo que sea para nacer.
El Folk Horror de la Pampa
El cine de terror es, probablemente, la clasificación con más subgéneros del audiovisual. La aprehensión se abre en un abanico infinito de formas que estructuran lo que nos remueve las entrañas, según su expresión estética y su contenido. Cuando acecha la maldad se enmarca claramente dentro del cine de posesiones, con sus elementos más reconocibles imbuidos en la trama. No obstante, Demián Rugna apuesta por llevarse el subgénero a su propio terreno y construye una dimensión única. La maldad se extiende como una patología, una plaga que mancha e infecta todo lo que toca y de la que hay que cuidarse como si de una epidemia se tratara.

Si bien su relación con el cine de posesiones es clara y concisa, hay algo más que vertebra su trama y se refleja en cómo se extiende el terror: los entornos rurales y aislados, la superstición y la creencia popular en contra de lo racional, las normas de tradición oral para convivir con una sobrenaturalidad cotidiana y la representación de los quiebros sociales convierten Cuando acecha la maldad en una obra de folk horror local y personal. El propio Rugna afirma que el germen de la película reside en las tierras y el agua contaminadas, el abandono de las zonas rurales y la gente enferma y desamparada en contraposición al desarrollo urbano. Y se vale de la ambientación rural y el folklore para retratar la desigualdad social y económica, el tedio y la ineficacia burocrática y las limitaciones gubernamentales para llevar ayuda a lugares aislados y vulnerables.
Cómo se gesta la maldad
Cuando acecha la maldad es una película completamente asquerosa, en el mejor sentido de la palabra. Su aproximación a lo siniestro no se preocupa por la construcción clásica del terror: hay algo de ansiedad anticipatoria en algunas escenas, sí, pero no llega lejos en la construcción de la tensión, no hay catarsis ni hay sugerencias a media luz. En su lugar, Rugna se lanza de lleno al horror y se recrea en él con un deleite que revuelve los estómagos más fuertes.
Los elementos sobrenaturales no irrumpen en la normalidad de sus protagonistas, sino que forman parte de ella y se tratan con la misma cotidianidad con la que se trata a un enfermo tras años de pandemia. Esto lleva a que el espectador entre en esa normalidad como pez fuera del agua, enfrentando el horror en su máxima expresión desde el desconcierto y la confusión. Comprendemos la situación de esa Argentina rural y sus embichados de forma lenta y paulatina, con una duda inicial entre raciocinio y sugestión que acaba deshaciéndose en una montaña rusa de gore y brutalidad que no deja lugar a incertidumbre.

Rugna no hace prisioneros a la hora de mostrar la crudeza de su terror, no solo recreándose en el asco y la violencia sino mezclándolo con una inocencia que tan bien le sienta al género. “A la maldad le gustan los niños, y a los niños les gusta la maldad” afirma la película en un tercer acto de horror que mira de lleno a la infancia y que enamoraría a Chicho Ibañez y su Quién puede matar a un niño (1976).
Por desgracia, es en este tercer acto donde Cuando acecha la maldad pierde fuelle y su efectismo flaquea a la hora de tapar agujeros. En comparación con su construcción inicial, el clímax se presenta tibio, conveniente e irregular para cerrar con un epílogo que vuelve al horror pesimista y consigue concluir la cinta con un buen sabor de boca pese a los altibajos de su segunda mitad.

Si Aterrados (2018) ya puso a Demián Rugna en el radar de los amantes del género, Cuando acecha la maldad consolida al creador argentino como uno de los grandes exponentes del terror actual.
