El cine apocalíptico podría ser infinito. Por muchas películas que se estrenen, seguirá habiendo drama, conflicto e interés en ver cómo la humanidad se enfrenta al fin del mundo. Las películas de Un lugar tranquilo irrumpieron en el género hace años con un high-concept: el ataque de unos seres extraterrestres que no ven, pero escuchan. En esta nueva entrega, en la que asistimos al primer día de la invasión, la protagonista es Sam, encarnada por Lupita Nyong’o, una enferma de cáncer que ha ido a Nueva York al teatro con la promesa de comer pizza antes de volver a su deprimente residencia. Normalmente, el objetivo del protagonista en este tipo de películas es sobrevivir. O salvar a sus seres queridos, o salvar el mundo. Pero en este caso, la avanzada enfermedad de Sam ha hecho que, en el momento de la invasión, ella ya haya aceptado su propia muerte, ya esté viviendo su propio apocalipsis. Por eso su objetivo no cambia cuando llegan los alienígenas: ella ha ido a la ciudad a por su trozo de pizza.

No era fácil superar a la carismática familia Abbott, protagonistas de las dos primeras películas de la saga, que dirigía John Krasinski. Michael Sarnoski, director de esta nueva entrega de la franquicia, toma el testigo centrando la historia en dos nuevos personajes. Sam, que avanza en dirección contraria a una multitud que intenta salvarse, se encuentra con Eric, que decide acompañarla a por pizza. Eric es débil, sufre ataques de ansiedad y no tiene a nadie más en la ciudad.
